Each Mezuza is made of 2 parts: the Mezuzah Case (also called Mezuzah house ) and the Mezuzah scroll:
Mezuzah Cases come in a huge variety of shapes, sizes and colors. The bible mentions no restriction on the material the Mezuzah Case should be made of. The Mezuzah Case is usually not longer than 12cm.
Unlike the Mezuzah Cases, Mezuzah scrolls have rules, delineating how exactly they should look. The Mezuzah scroll must be handwritten, according to Orthodox Jews, by a rabbi who was ordained to write scriptures. The Mezuzah scroll contains 2 paragraphs taken from Deuteronomy (6:4-9 and 11:13-21). The Mezuzah scroll has to be kept intact. It is enough for one letter to be written incorrectly, or to be erased from the Mezuzah scroll, for the entire Mezuzah scroll to be considered invalid. Mezuzah scrolls need to be examined after the rabbi finishes writing them and re-examined once in a few years. If the inspection find the Mezuzah scrolls not intact, they need to be replaced.
The Mezuzah house is hung on every doorpost, which has a lintel. Despite that, the Mezuzah house will not be hung on rooms which are too small to live in (walk-in closets for instance). The Mezuzah house will not be hung on bathrooms or toilets, to prevent desecration of Mezuzahs. Provided that they have a lintel, a Mezuzah house has to be hung on garage doors and gates too.

The word Mezuzah has different transcriptions in English: Mezuza in singular, or Mezuzahs, Mezuzas and Mezuzot in plural. The word Mezuzot is the accurate transcription from Hebrew - 'ot' is a Hebrew suffix denoting plural (one Mezuza, many Mezuzot). It is common for both instances (i.e both Mezuzot and Mezuzahs) to occur in speech, thought the latter is more prevalent.
Every religious Jew is commanded by god, to affix Mezuzah to the doorpost of the house, 30 days within entering the house. The Mitzvah (order in Hebrew) to affix Mezuzah, is first given in Deuteronomy 6:9. God commands his people to remember his laws, and tells them to hang these laws on the doorposts (Mezuzahs in Hebrew) of their houses.
The word Mezuzah, which as mentioned earlier, meant doorpost in origin, changed its meaning throughout time. Today, people mistakenly think that Mezuzahs are the Mezuzah Cases. In fact, this is wrong. The Mezuzah Cases have no special relevance.
In fact, the only thing that matters is the Mezuzah scroll – a handwritten parchment, which is inserted into Mezuzah Cases (and it is this parchment which is the Mezuzah).
