Each Mezuzah house (or Mezuzah case) is filled with Mezuzah scrolls, made of parchment. Two paragraphs are written on the Mezuzah scroll:
The first is taken from Deuteronomy 6:4-9, and the second is taken from Deuteronomy 11:13-21. According to Orthodox Judaism, every Mezuza must be written by Sofer Stam (a rabbi who was ordained to write scriptures, books and Mezuzah scrolls). Today, people can buy Mezuzah scrolls which were printed and not hand written (even though Jewish authorities see a Mezuza like this as unauthorized).
Many Mezuzah cases contain the letter Shin written on them. Many other Mezuzah cases have the word Shaday (sha-da-y) written on them. Shaday is one of god's names but is also an acronym that means Shomer Daltot Israel (Israel's Doors Guardian).
Hanging an empty Mezuzah case doesn't Fulfill god's orders.After the Mezuzah scroll is rolled and inserted into the Mezuzah house, the Mezuzah house is affixed to the right side doorpost at a slight angle, and a short ceremony called 'Dedication of the house' (Hanukat ha bayit) is recited.
The reason why Mezuzahs are affixed at a slight angle is due to a dispute rabbis had – they couldn't decide whether Mezuzahs should be hung horizontally or vertically, so it was decided that Mezuzahs shall be hung horizontally with a slight angle.

It is customary to kiss Mezuzahs upon entering or exiting the house. This Mitzvah (order in Hebrew) reminds believers of the Mezuzahs and of god's rules which are in the Mezuzah house.
Unlike ancient times, where Mezuzah cases were mainly made of wood, today Mezuzah cases are made of varying sorts of materials. Mezuzah cases are usually up to 12 centimeters long and a few centimeters wide.
It is customary to take the Mezuzah house out, when a Jewish family leaves their house. Though the Mezuzah house is not sacred, if a Mezuzah scroll is left inside it, and the Mezuzah house is treated badly by the house' new occupants, the Mezuzah scroll is being desecrated.
What is the Mezuza:
The word Mezuzah (also written as: Mezuza in singular and Mezuzahs, Mesusas and Mezuzot in plural), comes from the bible. The original meaning was the two planks or walls to each side of the door. Today, the word Mezuzah is colloquially used for the Mezuzah case.
This use is erroneous. The box is the Mezuzah case, while the scroll inside the box is the Mezuzah itself.
